MiniKunstFestival is a biannual recurring project in 4bid gallery. Each edition is characterized by a different topic related to the contemporary Era. For this second edition the theme is Hacking attitude in all-possible aspects. The Festival aims to create a multidisciplinary environment where a variety of artistic practices can question each other and their relationship to contemporary art and society.

Hacker (n.) [originally, someone who makes furniture with an axe].

“A hacker is one who enjoys the intellectual challenge of creatively overcoming and circumventing limitations of programming systems and who tries to extend their capabilities.”

Verna Gehring (2004).

Previous reflection about Dystopia 1st edition:

“In this moment of global change, where new technologies have modified drastically people’s life styles it is good to ask ourselves where all this is leading us to and what will our future look like.”

Now with Be_Hacker MiniKunstFestival, we want to reflect on non-ordinary ways to express ourselves. Manifesting ourselves powerfully, gaining strength to lead through contemporary life. The Festival encourages a discussion about overproduction, institutionalization. social structures and how do we engage with our surrounding environment. We try to imagine how new links between singular human-beings vs common social structures and how this wider context can be managed in our individual daily life.

Which is the attitude to Be_Hacker?

Just as the term “hacker” describes various kinds of people who handle systems in unconventional ways, “hack” describes this very activity itself, be it as a trick or deception, as an efficacious, but conceptionally unclean intervention (like a “patch” or a “bugfix”), or as a solution that is at once ingeniously simple and elegant, absorbing an abundance of issues in the most dense possible form.  Since, as a “hack”, Ulysses‘ wooden horse in fact didn’t exist but in the medium of language and as an artistic product of Homer’s epic, it comes to no surprise that the theory of the art of language and oration was likewise the first to put down a theory of the “hack”.

“1. A person who enjoys exploring the details of programmable systems and how to stretch their capabilities, as opposed to most users who prefer to learn only the minimum necessary.

2. One who programs enthusiastically (even obsessively) or who enjoys programming rather than just theorizing about programming.

3. A person capable of appreciating hack value.

4. A person who is good at programming quickly.

5. An expert at a particular program, or one who frequently works with or on it; as in ‘a Unix hacker’. (Definitions 1 through 5 are correlated, and people who fit them congregate.)

6. An expert or enthusiast of any kind.  One might be an astronomy hacker, for example.

7. One who enjoys the intellectual challenge of creatively overcoming or circumventing limitations.

8. (deprecating) A malicious meddler who tries to discover sensitive information by poking around.  Hence ‘password hacker’, ‘network hacker’. The correct term for this sense is “cracker.””
